Local High School Students win UPBPW Women in History Essay Contest


Upper Perkiomen Business and Professional Women’s Organization with cooperation of the History Department at Upper Perkiomen High School sponsored once again an essay contest in honor of Women in History Month, celebrated each March.  This year’s theme, “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment”, honors the extraordinary and often unrecognized determination and resolve of women. Against social rule and often legal restraints, women have created a legacy that expands the forefront of possibilities for generations to come. They have demonstrated their character, courage and commitment as mothers, educators, business and community leaders where their work inspires girls and women to achieve their full potential.  The contest was open to all Upper Perkiomen High School students.  Written essays were submitted to the History Department, and were judged by the committee members of the UPBPW on April 1st.  The winning entrants and family members, along with Brianne Caruso, History teacher, and fellow English teachers, Alicia Cortese and Mary Ellen Holtz were guests of the UPBPW at the April 14th dinner meeting held at the PC Pub, Pennsburg, PA.   During the Women in History Program the winners read their essays to the group.  1st place winner, Bao Do read her essay titled, My Mother, and received a $100 award and certificate.  2nd place winner, Emily Barker, read her essay titled, Miss Cortese and received a $75 award and certificate.  There were two 3rd place winners both who received $50 and a certificate; Erika Maximuck read her essay titled, Luanne B. Stauffer, and Samantha Dingler’s essay titled Mother, was read by BPW member Gerry Fioriglio, Women in History committee chair.   The women in these essays are positive role models who have taught these students the true meaning of Character, Courage, and Commitment.  Congratulations to all.
